#2: Visit a New NBA Stadium/Center/Arena & #8: Travel to a New State

     I’ve always been a basketball fanatic. Because of that, I wanted to make it a goal of mine to visit a new NBA venue this year. The tough part for me would be which one as there are so many that I want to visit!

     Last year, I went to the NCAA March Madness basketball games in Chicago, IL with a few friends and had a blast. Wanting to go visit those same friends in Indianapolis (plus Michaela), where they had relocated to upon graduation,  I figured it would be convenient for me to kill 3 birds with 1 stone – visiting a new NBA venue, traveling to a new state, and visiting those friends I hadn’t seen in what felt like forever.

Soooo we bought tickets to the sessions at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse not knowing who would be playing where (which was a blessing in disguise because the tickets skyrocketed once the teams came out). We got really good seats and had a weekend filled with basketball! It just so happened that the Monster Energy Supercross was also in Indianapolis on the Saturday we were there and had no plans so we also bought tickets for that and I got to visit Lucas Oil Stadium as well! It was a full weekend filled with lots of driving, basketball, dirt biking, and great company.

The picture at the top left was one Allie took during the second session – the two guys to the right of me were also part of our group…they’re just camera shy haha. As you can see, we still rocked our Iowa State gear (though they did not play in Indianapolis), met another Iowa State fan, of course, and even spotted Georges Niang! Iowa State fans are everywhere!

#12: Do Something Out of Character

If you haven’t heard or seen already, about 2 weeks ago, there was a construction accident in my condo building and my front entry way and half of my kitchen got flooded. Because of this, I decided to take a last minute trip to visit my parents in Phoenix to alleviate my frustration at the situation. I literally booked my flight the day  before I flew out of Minneapolis. Why is this something out of character for me? See below.

 

If you’re not familiar with my type A ‘planning ‘personality, let me familiarize yourself with how I work. I plan. Like everything. Seriously. I have morning and night routines that I try to follow. I have a weekly and monthly calendar in my condo that I keep up to date as well as planners for both the meals that I make and my current workout routine. I could go on and on, but I think you get my point. So, for me, going on this spur of the moment trip was very out of character. However, I made the most of it.

 

Phoenix/Arizona is one of my all time favorite places (I wouldn’t be surprised if you see me move here in the future) to visit and now that my parents live there, it’s super easy to plan a weekend trip there. We hung out by the pool, went biking, hiking, and, of course, ate tacos! Officially a successful unexpected weekend for me!

#15 Get Rid of 2 Unnecessary ‘Things’ Each Month: February

 

Earlier this week, when I was taking care of the aftermath of my sister’s baby shower, I happened to open one of the closets in my apartment and noticed that my shoe holder had fallen down from where it was hanging. Ok – great Alysa – why do I, as your reader, care about this? Here’s why: to me, this was a ‘sign’ so to speak that I need to get rid of some of my shoes – which is something that I have never really been able to do. I always think ‘this pair could go with this outfit or that outfit’ and ‘just because I don’t wear them now doesn’t mean I won’t in the future.’

Lucky for me, I saw how this could directly play into my list of 24 adventures (#15 to be exact). I decided that I didn’t need all 50 some pairs of shoes and that it was time to let a few pairs go. I’ll admit, it was hard, but not as hard as I thought it would be. You see, I can remember stories about each pair of these shoes and where I got them or who got them for me (some form of attachment, I would assume). The pair of black/silver and pink tennis shoes on the left hand side were from Costco out of all places and were given to me by my parents. The two pairs of flats next in line (gold and pink) were both pairs that I bought for recruitment. I bought the brown booties from Kohl’s. The brown Birkenstocks are the first pair of Birkenstocks that I owned (and by far the hardest to give up but they’re cracking). The cheetah print flats are a pair that I bought for fun (and, to be honest, have rarely worn…). Last but not least, the white and blue basketball shoes are the shoes I wore when I played AAU basketball in elementary school and junior high (why I still have them I’m not sure – but I did try them on and they still fit haha).

I could talk about my shoes for hours. But, for the purpose of this blog post, I’ll move on to the second ‘thing’ I am getting rid of for the month of February: one of the two alarm clock/radios I have. Why I have two, I don’t know. However, I do know that two is not necessary. AND I have no clue how to use the alarm portion of this so it’s time to go. As you can probably tell, this was REALLY easy for me to get rid of – I have no attachment to it whatsoever and don’t know how to use it.

Through this, I have realized what I tend to spend a lot of time focusing on – things! What do these things bring me? Nothing! Cheers to continuing to build my life with Jesus as the center and continuing to get rid of these things that do not bring me happiness!

24 Adventures Before 24

The list for year 23 (to finish before December 23):

  1. Work out at least 6 days a week for 2 months (4 weeks).
  2. Visit a new NBA Stadium/Center/Arena.
  3. Invent my own cocktail.
  4. Make 2 crafts solely following instructions via Pinterest.
  5. Go on a whole day biking adventure and document each stop.
  6. Get a massage.
  7. Have a technology Free weekend (Friday through Sunday).
  8. Travel to a new state.
  9. Get a tattoo.
  10. Go 2 months without drinking alcohol.
  11. Camp under the stars.
  12. Do something out of character.
  13. Find my ‘place.’
  14. Conquer a fear.
  15. Get rid of 2 unnecessary ‘things’ each month.
  16. Create/cook a 5 course meal for me + 5 others who do not know each other.
  17. Go on a weekend getaway.
  18. Eat at Torchy’s.
  19. Read 7 self-improvement books.
  20. Attend a meetup event.
  21. Don’t eat out for 2 months straight.
  22. Go to an Iowa State Away game wearing over the top school spirit. I’m thinking bringing my flag, face tattoos, etc.
  23. Run a 5K.
  24. Hammock at an unusual place to hammock.
